Process

  1. Listen - Learn to distinguish accurate vs. inaccurate sounds made by the teacher.
  2. Understand - Learn the anatomical differences between accurate and inaccurate sounds.
  3. Experiment - Try to implement your new understanding of anatomy to create more accurate sounds.
  4. Feedback - The teacher indicates (silently, where possible) how close you are to the target sound, with the aim of training YOUR ears to listen to your own speech and adjust your mouth position accordingly.
  5. Integration - Learn where to use the target sounds in specific words and then phrases.
  6. Free Speech Analysis - The teacher listens to you speak freely and assesses the level of accuracy.
  7. Repeat as needed!
  8. Homework is usually based on steps 3 and 5, so no essays to write - phew!
